ECU Remapping — Common Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often about our ecu remapping service.
- 1.What is ECU remapping?
- ECU remapping modifies the software inside your engine control unit to optimise fuel injection, ignition timing, boost pressure, and other parameters. The result is improved power, torque, throttle response, and often better fuel economy — all from the same hardware your vehicle already has.
- 2.Is ECU remapping safe for my vehicle?
- Yes, when carried out professionally. At Naked Frog, every remap is developed within the safe mechanical limits of your specific engine. We never exceed factory safety margins. Our tunes are designed with long-term reliability in mind and are backed by a warranty on all our work.
- 3.How long does an ECU remap take?
- A standard Stage 1 remap typically takes 1–2 hours. This covers reading your current ECU data, optimising the calibration maps for your engine, and writing the new software back. More complex setups or vehicles requiring bench programming may take longer.
- 4.Can an ECU remap be reversed?
- Absolutely. We always store a full backup of your original ECU file before any modifications. If you ever need to revert — for a dealer visit, warranty claim, or resale — we can restore your vehicle to factory settings quickly and easily.
- 5.Will remapping affect my manufacturer warranty?
- A manufacturer could technically refuse warranty claims if they detect a remap. However, modern tunes are very difficult to detect, and many customers run tuned vehicles throughout their warranty period without issue. If you're concerned, we can revert your ECU before dealer visits.
- 6.What types of vehicles can be remapped?
- We remap petrol and diesel cars, vans, 4x4s, and light commercial vehicles across all major brands including BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford, Mercedes, Vauxhall, Peugeot, and many more. If your vehicle has an ECU — which virtually all modern vehicles do — it can almost certainly be remapped. Contact us with your make, model, and year to confirm.
- 7.How much power will I gain from a remap?
- Gains vary by vehicle and engine. Turbocharged diesels typically see 20–40% more power and 25–50% more torque. Turbocharged petrol engines usually gain 15–25%. Naturally aspirated engines see smaller gains, typically 5–10%. We can give you accurate before/after figures for your specific model before you commit.
- 8.Do I need to service my car before a remap?
- It's not mandatory, but we recommend it. A vehicle in good mechanical condition will respond better to a remap and the results will be more predictable. Fresh oil, a clean air filter, and no active fault codes give us the best starting point. If we find underlying issues during our pre-remap inspection, we'll advise you before proceeding.
