Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about ECU remapping and vehicle tuning
1.What is ECU remapping?
ECU remapping is the process of modifying the software that controls your vehicle's engine. The ECU (Engine Control Unit) contains maps that determine fuel injection, ignition timing, boost pressure, and other parameters. By optimising these maps, we can improve performance, fuel economy, and throttle response.
2.Is ECU remapping safe for my vehicle?
Yes, when done professionally. At Naked Frog, we only tune within safe parameters that your engine can handle. We never push beyond the mechanical limits of your vehicle. All our tunes are developed with reliability in mind, and we offer a warranty on our work for peace of mind.
3.What's the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 tuning?
Stage 1 tuning is a software-only modification that works with your vehicle's existing hardware. It typically provides 20-35% power gains. Stage 2 requires supporting modifications like a performance exhaust, upgraded intercooler, or intake system, and delivers even greater power increases.
4.How long does an ECU remap take?
A standard Stage 1 remap typically takes 1-2 hours. This includes reading your current ECU data, optimising the maps, and writing the new software back to your vehicle. More complex tunes or vehicles requiring additional work may take longer.
5.Will remapping void my manufacturer warranty?
Technically, a manufacturer could void warranty claims if they detect a remap. However, modern remaps are very difficult to detect, and many customers keep their vehicles tuned throughout the warranty period. If you're concerned, we can discuss options including reverting the tune before dealer visits.
6.Can remapping improve fuel economy?
Yes! Our economy tunes are specifically designed to improve fuel efficiency, often delivering 10-15% better MPG. Even performance tunes can improve economy because the engine runs more efficiently. With more torque available, you'll find yourself using less throttle in everyday driving.
7.What vehicles can you tune?
We can tune almost any vehicle with an ECU, including petrol cars, diesels, vans, and some commercial vehicles. We specialise in popular makes like BMW, Audi, VW, Ford, Mercedes, Vauxhall, and many more. Contact us with your vehicle details for confirmation.
8.Do you offer a mobile tuning service?
Yes! We offer mobile ECU remapping across Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland, County Durham, Northumberland, and the wider North East. We can come to your home or workplace at a time that suits you.
9.Can a remap be reversed?
Absolutely. We always keep a backup of your original ECU file. If for any reason you want to revert to stock settings, we can restore your vehicle to its factory configuration. This is useful if you're selling the vehicle or need to return it under warranty.
10.What is a DPF and why does it cause problems?
The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) captures soot from your exhaust to reduce emissions. Over time, it can become blocked, especially on vehicles used mainly for short journeys. We offer DPF cleaning and diagnostic services to restore your vehicle's performance without expensive replacement parts.
